The most important thing you need to know
Anyone in the UK can call themselves a locksmith. There is no government licence, no mandatory qualification, no register every locksmith must appear on. A rogue operator can create a Google Maps listing, a professional-looking website, and a company at Companies House in an afternoon — and be taking callouts by the next day. The only meaningful verification that exists is MLA membership — and even that is being falsely claimed by rogue operators who use the letters without being members. This guide tells you exactly how to cut through the false claims and find someone genuine.
Are you on the MLA register?
Ask for their MLA member number. Then verify it yourself at locksmiths.co.uk before they arrive. Takes 30 seconds. If they are not on the register — do not call them out.
Can you give me a fixed price before you start work?
A genuine locksmith gives a fixed price on the phone and does not change it when they arrive. Any locksmith who cannot or will not quote a fixed price before attending is a risk.
Will you bring ID and your MLA member card?
A genuine MLA approved locksmith carries a photo ID card with their MLA membership and DBS check status on it. Ask them to confirm they will bring it. If they arrive without it — do not let them start work.
What is your Companies House registration number?
A genuine established locksmith business is registered at Companies House with a real trading address and current accounts. Check the number at find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk before they arrive.
Do you charge extra for drilling?
A skilled locksmith almost never needs to drill a standard lock. Drilling is a technique used by rogue operators to justify much higher charges. If a locksmith says they may need to drill before even seeing the lock — this is a red flag.
MLA stands for Master Locksmiths Association. Because MLA is not a registered trademark — any website, any company, any Google Maps listing can use the phrase MLA approved without being a member. Rogue operators specifically use these phrases to appear in searches by consumers looking for verified operators.
The only way to confirm genuine MLA membership is this — go to locksmiths.co.uk, use the find-a-locksmith search, enter the postcode, and check whether the company appears with a current licence number. If the company does not appear there — the MLA claim is false. Completely. Regardless of what their website says.
What genuine MLA membership looks like
Company appears on the locksmiths.co.uk register with a current licence number you can verify
The operative has passed the MLA qualification examination — proof of genuine skill
A DBS criminal record check has been completed through the MLA specifically — not self-arranged
The company has been physically inspected by an MLA regional inspector
The operative carries an ID card showing their name, photo, MLA member number, and DBS status
The MLA has a complaints procedure — if you are overcharged by a genuine MLA member you can complain directly to the MLA
Perfect 5.0 score across many reviews — A genuine locksmith accumulates occasional 3 or 4 star reviews. A perfect 5.0 across 30 or more reviews almost always indicates injected fake reviews.
Business address is a virtual office, serviced suite, or flat — A locksmith registered at a Regus suite, a Monomark House address, or a residential flat has no genuine local premises. Check the address on Google Street View before calling.
Phone number starts 020 8087, 020 3633, 020 3519, 020 3951, 020 3670 or 020 3727 — These prefixes are documented VoIP number banks used across multiple fake locksmith listings. A number with these prefixes routes to an overseas call centre not a local locksmith.
Company name keyword stuffed with emergency, fast, local, 24/7, elite, pro, master — Genuine locksmiths operating under their own name do not call their company Fast Emergency Local Locksmith 247 Ltd. Keyword stuffed names are designed to match searches not reflect a real business.
No verifiable company at Companies House — Search the trading name at find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk. If no company appears, or the company is recently incorporated at a virtual office with no filed accounts — this is a red flag.
Two different operative names in reviews — If some reviews name John and others name George as the operative for the same listing — this is a call centre dispatching multiple operatives, not a genuine local locksmith.
No ID card or refuses to show one — Every MLA approved locksmith carries a photo ID card. If they cannot produce it — they are not MLA approved regardless of what they told you on the phone.
Price is higher than quoted before starting — If the quoted price changes at the door before work begins — you are not obliged to proceed. The original quoted price is what you legally owe. Send them away if the price changes.
Says the lock must be drilled immediately — A skilled locksmith attempts to pick the lock before drilling. Drilling should be a last resort. An operative who says the lock must be drilled before attempting to open it by other means is generating a reason to charge more.
Cash only, no card machine — Genuine established locksmith businesses accept card payment. Cash only is a consistent feature of rogue operators — it leaves no paper trail and makes chargebacks impossible.
Astra Security lock brand mentioned as requiring expensive replacement — Astra Security is a lock brand specifically used by rogue operators to justify inflated replacement costs. If the operative mentions Astra Security locks — this is a documented price manipulation signal.
Becomes aggressive or persistent when challenged on price — A genuine locksmith does not become aggressive when questioned about pricing. Intimidation at the door — refusing to leave, demanding cash, becoming verbally aggressive — is a criminal matter. Call 999 if you feel threatened.
Credit card over £100 — Section 75
Contact your card provider and request a refund under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act. Your card provider is jointly liable for the overcharge.
Debit card — chargeback
Contact your bank and request a chargeback within 120 days of payment. Explain you were misled about the price before work commenced.
